Twelve years ago, Davis Islands resident Kristen Morris came up with the idea of bringing folks in her neighborhood together for a holiday celebration. Davis Islands, being a golf cart-friendly community, seemed the perfect place for a golf cart parade, and thus the tradition began.

A crowd of over 100 people gathered for Ybor Night Out in the 1920 Ybor music venue to honor the remembrance of the lives lost and those who were injured in a shooting incident one year ago in Ybor City. The violence on the weekend before Halloween 2023 in Ybor City took the lives of 20-year-old Harrison Boonstopple and 14-year-old Elijah Wilson.

Days before the storm formed, forecasters warned of the probability of a large hurricane entering the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Helen quickly accelerated from a Category 1 to a Category 4 in 24 hours. Experts, historians, and interested Tampa folks gathered at the J.C Newman Cigar Factory to celebrate and discuss the release of the series after 45 years to the public.
Exonerated After 37 Years in Prison, Robert Duboise Speaks
Robert Duboise was convicted of rape and murder. He spent 37 years in prison until he was exonerated in 2020 with the help of the former state's attorney Andrew Warren. and the Innocence Project. He spoke at Cafe Con Tampa, describing the culture shock after being released and his attitude about his wrongful conviction.
Salud! The Commodore Comedy Club and Locals Provide the Funny
The Commodore Comedy Club, a vibrant addition to the up-and-coming corner at 7th Avenue in Nebraska, opened its doors seven months ago. Once a month, they offer the Salud And Happy Days show, a one-of-a-kind series in which experienced improvisers re-enact stories of Tampa History inspired by live interviews with some of the city’s well-known and wonderfully funny storytellers.
Cuban Sandwich Eating Competition is Served at J.C. Newman Cigar Co.
The JC Newman cigar at the factory on 16th St. in Ybor City sponsored the first annual Cuban sandwich-eating contest on Saturday as part of its fourth Founders Day. Competitors included married world champion eaters Nick Wehry and Miki Sudo and local radio personality Drew Garabo from 102.5 The Bone. Wehry and Sudo, known as the Hungry Couple, are from Pasco County and travel the world competing.

The 120th annual Florida State Fair opened its doors on Thursday, welcoming crowds to the 12-day event. It was warm and sunny, perfect weather for the fair. There are new additions this year to the next, including Bello Nock’s Aqua Rock Show, a waterborne thrill show featuring jet skis and flying entertainers, and the Secret Walls Live Paint Battle, where teams of artists take 90 minutes to create a mural in front of a live audience who then vote on the winner.
